Been away for awhile, but i figured i would come back with a post that showcased one of my favorite applications i have been using with OS Lion. A diamond in the rough: Logo Design Studio Pro (AppStore).
Logo Design Studio slightly seems like it’s a cheap, useless app until you try it and break into it. It does use a vector engine, so you can expect to be able to up-size the logos you make to ridiculous proportions without losing any quality just like Adobe Illustrator and Vector Designer. This on the other hand, is much easier.
Upon launch of the app you’ll notice that its user interface consists of simply a pallet on the left for your tools, a centered window for your design, and an inspector window on the right. Just like we are all used to in almost every design application.
The templates included can be very helpful. To create the logo I used for this post I simply opened a simple template, selected the main blue shape and its glossy shade and flipped it over so it was under the image rather than above it. That simple gesture makes for a completely different shape and brand new logo, and no one would ever know. There are tons of different templates to pick from.
Compared to most design apps, they didn’t half-ass the preloaded shapes and objects that you can pick from to make a great logo. Not just basic, bland shapes included with Photoshop and Illustrator. These are full featured, sometimes even complex shapes; and all it takes is a little flip as proven above, to create a whole new image for your logo. A complete redesign in just a split second if you’d like.
One last interesting feature that sets Logo Design Studio apart from the rest.. They’re focused on creating a logo. The app is surely capable of standard, random vector design. It could be used most likely as a secondary to Illustrator or Vector Designer for the creation of small shapes and small touches for your project. But this app is meant for the creation of logos. So? They threw in a non-obtrusive sidebar containing a list of preset ‘taglines’ for your brand name. You can hide the menu with a single click of the tagline button located in the main windows toolbar.
Overall: Great application for logo design. It brings a new meaning to being a dedicated app.
Readers: Have you had any experience with Logo Design Studio? What do you think of it in comparison to other dedicated vector apps?
